Tim Kaine Expresses Interest in Drilling Off Virginia’s Coast and Shifting Dirty Energy Subsidies to Clean Energy

In an interview with the Augusta Free Press, Virginia Democratic Senate candidate criticized Republican candidate George Allen’s climate change denial and scorn for clean energy. “The area where I disagree with my opponent on is he doesn’t believe human activity effects climate, and he ridicules the notion of alternative energy,” he said. “He would vote for every subsidy for oil companies but would vote against any kind of a break or subsidy for solar or wind or geothermal or other energy sources.”

Here’s a transcript of Kaine’s remarks:

I’m what I call an all of the above guy on energy. So I think we need to use every domestic source that we have. But, I think we ought to be preparing for a long term shift toward energy sources that are lower carbon or no carbon. So, natural gas. We’ve got great natural gas resources in this country. We should be doing it offshore, I’m open to it as long, and this is important, as long as the resources are shared with Virginia. I don’t want to do offshore drilling off the coast of Virginia and have most of the revenues go to the federal government. I think Virginia should be entitled to big chunks of those revenues. Mark Warner and Jim Webb have a bill that I would I think revenue share in an appropriate way.

But I do think, Chris, that the area where I disagree with my opponent on is he doesn’t believe human activity effects climate, and he ridicules the notion of alternative energy. He would vote for every subsidy for oil companies but would vote against any kind of a break or subsidy for solar or wind or geothermal or other energy sources. There is a $2.3 trillion global industry in alternative energy. The U.S. used to be a leader in that. We’re not any more but we’ve got to reassert leadership. I would over time sort of shift the subsidies away from the mature industries like petroleum and natural gas and I’d put them more into clean energy.
